A common language is the base for communication. Without right words it is not easy to express feelings and sensations or know what someone feels like. During the first day of Youth, Communication and Future have I noticed it very clear because I don´t speak Spanish and only few here speak English.
When there is no common language, everything happens slower: things have to be said many times and they still are being misunderstood or not understood at all, one doesn´t get to know what to do, when and how, and when it´s about communicating, the problem is not just one´s of us. Media is teamwork, there is always somebody waiting for another just to get pictures or an article. That´s why we have deadlines but if we don´t have a common language, the deadlines are useless. Language barrier is also a barrier to learning.
The modern technology has not made the world smaller but it sure has taken us closer to each other. Via internet we can communicate with people in the other side of the world online, we get news from Hong Kong, New York and London in a blink of an eye and it all is not only a blessing. It´s a challenge. For us working in media that challenge means more work to be done faster and faster – before the competitors. People are no more hungry to know what happened in their neighborhood during the weekend, they want to get to know what has happened in global in last 5 minutes. And we are the people who are feeding them in their own language.
Language skills are never useless, it´s a huge step forward to have someone who can communicate not only with the people in the areas of one language because it´s a way to be faster and in advantage to the others. Today´s situation is not very bad and it´s getting better. Before the sun rises for the day when we all have a common language, probably English, we have to adapt to it. Luckily we have pictures, which say more than a thousand words.
